Root canal therapy in Spokane, WA

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure used to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed deep inside. Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When this tissue becomes damaged due to decay, trauma, or a crack in the tooth, it can cause pain, sensitivity, and infection. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue, cleans and seals the inside of the tooth, and allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than needing an extraction.

Why Choose Moran Prairie Dentistry

At Moran Prairie Dentistry, our goal is to make root canal treatment as comfortable and stress-free as possible. We use modern techniques and advanced technology to accurately diagnose the problem and gently treat the tooth. Our experienced team takes the time to explain each step, answers your questions, and ensures you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Saving your natural tooth helps maintain proper chewing, alignment, and long-term oral health - and we’re committed to helping you do just that.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

Your root canal appointment typically begins with 3D X-ray to evaluate the internal anatomy of the tooth.  Then we will numb the area to ensure your comfort. Most patients are pleasantly surprised to find the procedure feels similar to getting a filling.

Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Tucker will:

  • Access the inside of the tooth
  • Remove the infected or inflamed nerve
  • Carefully clean and disinfect the root canals
  • Fill and seal the tooth to prevent future infection

In many cases, the tooth will be temporarily restored until a crown is placed. Appointments are efficient and focused, and most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Root Canal Recovery & Post-Operative Care

After your root canal, it’s normal to experience mild soreness or sensitivity for a few days, especially when chewing. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and should improve quickly.

To help with healing:

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it is fully restored
  • Maintain good oral hygiene with gentle brushing and flossing
  • Follow any specific instructions provided by our team

Do I Need a Crown after a Root Canal?

Because a tooth that has had a root canal is more fragile, a dental crown is typically recommended. The crown strengthens and protects the tooth, restoring its function and helping prevent fractures in the future. Placing a crown is an important final step to ensure the long-term success of your root canal treatment.

If you have any concerns after your procedure, our team at Moran Prairie Dentistry is always here to help.
