What is a Dental Extractions

A dental extraction is a routine procedure in which a tooth is carefully removed when it can no longer be restored.   While our philosophy is always to save your natural teeth whenever possible, there are times when removing a tooth is the safest and healthiest choice.  At Moran Prairie Dentistry, we offer gentle, reliable dental extractions to help you maintain a healthy, pain-free smile.

Why You Might Need an Extraction

There are several situations where removing a tooth may be the healthiest option for your smile. Common reasons for dental extractions include:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be repaired with a filling, crown, or root canal
  • Advanced gum disease (periodontal disease) that has weakened the bone supporting a tooth
  • Cracked or broken teeth that extend below the gum line and cannot be restored
  • Infection or abscess that threatens surrounding teeth or bone
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth that cause pain, swelling, or crowding
  • Overcrowding when space is needed for orthodontic treatment
  • Teeth damaged by trauma that are no longer stable or functional

Following an extraction, we will discuss replacement options when appropriate, such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures, to help maintain your bite, function, and smile.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

In some cases, a bone graft may be recommended at the time of extraction to help preserve the jawbone. Bone grafting supports proper healing and helps maintain the natural shape of the jaw, especially if a tooth replacement is being considered.

After an extraction, we will discuss options to replace the missing tooth, which may include:

  • Dental implants for a strong, long-term solution
  • Dental bridges to restore function and appearance
  • Dentures or partial dentures when multiple teeth are missing

Planning ahead allows us to choose the best option for maintaining your bite, facial structure, and overall oral health.

Bone Grafting and Tooth Replacement

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often do not have enough room to fully erupt and function properly. When this occurs, they can become impacted, partially erupted, or difficult to clean, increasing the risk of pain, infection, swelling, and damage to nearby teeth.

At Moran Prairie Dentistry, we evaluate wisdom teeth using digital X-rays to determine the position of the tooth and the best timing for removal. We perform wisdom tooth extractions in our office, whether the teeth are causing symptoms or are likely to create future problems. Early evaluation and removal can help reduce complications and support long-term oral health.

What to Expect During an Extraction

Your extraction appointment begins with ensuring you are comfortable. The area will be thoroughly numbed, and additional comfort measures may be used as needed. Once the tooth is removed, the area is carefully cleaned, and sutures may be placed to promote proper healing.

Our team will review post-operative instructions with you before you leave, so you know exactly what to expect during recovery.

Post-Extraction Care

Proper home care is key to healing well and preventing complications such as dry socket.

For the first 24 hours:

  • Bite firmly on gauze to control bleeding
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws
  • Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid hot liquids
  • Take pain medication as directed
  • Use an ice pack intermittently to reduce swelling

After 24 hours:

  • Gently rinse with warm salt water 2–3 times a day
  • Continue soft foods until the area feels comfortable
  • Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 72 hours
  • Brush normally but avoid the extraction site for a few days

Most patients feel significantly better within a few days, with full healing occurring over the next couple of weeks.
