What are Composite or White Fillings?

At Moran Prairie Dentistry, we use advanced tooth-colored composite fillings to restore your teeth while keeping your smile natural and healthy. Composite is a durable, high-quality material that blends seamlessly with your tooth, making it an excellent choice for repairing cavities, chips, and small cracks.

Because the material bonds directly to the tooth, composite fillings allow us to be more conservative—preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. The result is a strong, long-lasting restoration that looks and feels great.

Our team focuses on comfort, communication, and modern techniques, making the entire process easy for patients of all ages. Whether you’re here for a routine filling or a cosmetic touch-up, we’re committed to providing care that is gentle, precise, and designed around you.

What to Expect During a Composite Filling

Getting a composite filling is a quick, comfortable procedure designed to restore your tooth while keeping it looking natural. Here’s what you can expect step-by-step:

Numbing the Tooth

We begin by gently numbing the area so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure. Most patients feel only slight pressure, not pain.

Removing the Decay

We carefully remove the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth while preserving as much healthy structure as possible. This helps keep your tooth strong long-term.

Preparing the Tooth

The clean surface is shaped and conditioned so the composite material securely bonds to your tooth. This step ensures a strong, long-lasting result.

Layering the Composite Material

Tooth-colored resin is placed in layers and sculpted to match the natural contours of your tooth. Each layer is cured with a special light to harden it instantly.

Shaping & Polishing

Once the filling is fully placed, we adjust the bite and polish the surface. This makes the filling smooth, natural-looking, and comfortable when you chew.

Immediate Function

Composite fillings set right away, so you can eat and drink as soon as the numbness wears off.

What to Expect After Your New Composite Filling

Proper care helps your new filling last as long as possible and keeps your tooth healthy.

Be Careful While Numb

Wait to eat until the numbness fades to avoid biting your cheek, lip, or tongue. Soft foods are best for the first few hours.

Hot/Cold Sensitivity is Normal

Mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a few days. This usually improves gradually.

  • Avoid very hot or iced beverages
  • Chew on the opposite side if needed

Bite Adjustment Awareness

If your filling feels “high” or your bite feels off once the numbness wears off, call the office. A quick adjustment can prevent soreness and protect the tooth.

Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods for 24 Hours

Composite is fully set, but allowing it a day before challenging chewing helps protect the bond and shaping.

Maintain Excellent Home Care

  • Brush twice daily
  • Floss around the tooth normally
  • Avoid aggressive brushing directly along the margin of the filling

Good hygiene prevents future decay from forming around the restoration.

Watch for Signs to Call the Office

Reach out if you notice:

  • Persistent sensitivity lasting more than 1–2 weeks
  • Sharp or worsening pain
  • A crack, chip, or rough edge
  • Pressure discomfort when biting

Routine Checkups Are Important

Regular visits help us monitor the filling, keep your mouth healthy, and catch early issues before they become larger problems.
